great idea!

i gotta say i think the stock air box is so restrictive to keep down noise and help fuel economy. you might be better off with removing the whole airbox and hooking up an aftermarket cone filter to a tube of some sort. and put the tube directly into the intake tube coming out of the stock airbox. just a thought! my airaid intake roars compared to the stock box. is your custom intake any louder?

Actually the stock Box is not all that restrictive if you open it up and look at it. It is a little noisier with the K+S replacement filter but not by much.

If you search the threads yull find a ton of info and opinions on this subject....in the end there is very little to gain modifiying the air intake so it'll be mainly a cosmetic upgrade. And alot feel going to an open cone INSIDE the eng area will be a downgrade due to hot air ingestion though it does improve to "sound" qualities of the motor.......

i have the cgs intake on the passenger side the radiator there is a plastic piece i cut a section out now cold air feeds into the air filter hope this makes an improvement with more cold air.

HHROrange the box mod you saw in Gatlinburg was on Nole,I've since changed the intake a couple of times. I tried a setup where I ran the intake hose to an elbow I installed on the back of the box,so air would be aimed straight at the filter and not across like stock.I pulled air from behind the grille like your setup. Then I did away with the box for good,I now have a cone filter in the space behind the driver's side headlight. It now draws plenty of cold air from outside from the gap above my foglight cover. The only thing is you have to pull the wheel and pull back the inner wheel well to get to the filter.

spectra performance uses almost the exact same technique for there cold air kit for carbed engines and supposedly it works nicely my buddy has it on his s10 350 swap and he dynoed after everything, right after he installed the spectra system he gained a little over 10 hp

limited funds here also. i just love the way it turned out. if there are any baffles or whatever in the air box itself i will cut them out. the baffles in the outside of filter i will leave, i think they help trap debri.
