Better performance, cut-out or aftermarket exhaust?

Better performance, cut-out or aftermarket exhaust?
So, I was thinking of getting an after market exhaust, but then remembered talking about an exhaust cut-out before and was curious which would provide better gains, or would a cut-out actually hurt performance? I like the idea of being able to go from stock to nothing with the flip of a switch, and if it would provide just as good of gains or better of a more expensive aftermarket exhaust, seems ideal.

That would be ideal, but also the most expensive route, which is what I am trying to avoid. Obviously that would seem that I am limiting myself to getting the cut-out, but that is not my intentions. I don't have a boatload of $$$$ to spend right now, so obviously the cut-out is the most reasonable option, and with the ability to go from stock to open is great as well, but if it would provide better gains to go aftermarket I would honestly rather go that route. The biggest problem is the cheapest exhaust system I have found is $300, ranging up from there, and when you start throwing in downpipes and all that, the figures go up fast! I was planning to spend around maybe $600 total, but I want the most for my money. I was trying to walk through what creates these gains in these systems, and I thought it was having the most free-flowing system that would provide the most power, and a cut-out would be just that as it eliminate all restrictions, but if that is not the case then please someone elaborate and let me know how all this plays in and what system provides the best gains at this time.

The info I am referring to is the difference in gains between a cut-out and a performance exhaust set-up. If it is both better for gains and cheaper to go with a cut-out, and you can switch back to stock at any time, then why would anyone spend so much on an exhaust system?
