Talking Cut hood - Cold Air Intake

I wanted to do it since day one , So i did. And to the ones that say it's crazy, I say , it's just a hood , It's replaceable.

Initial impresions.
It seems to spool a bit quicker.
It sounds Completly differant. Way better.
It always ran at 199 - 203 degrees , now 184 - 199
The BOV was never heard, now it is , even shifting way prior to redline.
The whole cut out was not removed, I left a 1 1/2 " flange that was bent to force the air over the engine. Right now about 3/4 of the pasengers side scoop is directly over the uncovered air box, I'd like to have tubing runing rite off the scoop holes to a customized air box, The yellow grills in the scoop will probally not make it in my final design.
I think its a good start. Negative and positive comments are always enjoyed.

P.S. Don't tell my wife about this, I'll never hear the end of it. (I CAN'T BELIVE YOU CUT A HOLE IN YOUR CAR !!!!!!!!!! )

It rained all day , not a drop in the air box.
I do supose i should keep the cover with me for those rare brutal rainfalls .
Any ideas how to cope with the rain and a set up like this.
Remember i'm no expert, This is in the begining stages. Advice or ideas is the reason i've posted this mod.

Looks like Darth Vadar!

I'm a fan of the hood lines on the HHR so I wouldn't do this to mine but I did remove the top of the air Cleaner box to inspect the filter only to discover a cone and wonder why they put the plastic around it. I can only surmise that it draws air from a cooler spot than on top the engine.

Yep, close a hood and the air at the top inside of the hood gets hot , fast.
They use the wheel well area to get cold air, After it gets air from constricted places, and sucks as hard as it can, It gets the cold air. into that box. I'm trying to bypass the snakeing and weaveing and sucking , to get to the box. As far as heat soak, Maybe louvers are the answer to realease the heat while sitting. ?

The comment box is open.

Reminds me of 'Black Manta" or was it just "Manta" from the "Superfriends" cartoon? The only thing better than a hood scoop is a functional hood scoop. The 70-70 Buick GS had a functional hood scoop and the way they solved the rain problem was putting drain holes in the bottom of the air boxes on each scoop (there were 2) at about a 45 degree angle from each other in the front. The only issue is that the best airflow you can get is either from the fenderwells or from the lower airdam on the front , which will also be the coolest aircharge , but it doesn't look as good as a hood scoop.

no rain when its sitting but wait till you drive it through a down pour, that filter is going suck up tons of water. Your airbag will be like a little pond. then when snow gets in there and freezes ohh man!!! Nice idea and i give anyone props to cutting a hole in their roof, just not my cup of tea. But good luck buddy!!
