Do you have a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission (transaxel)? Do you have a clutch pedal (manual) or not (automatic).

Transaxle = Transmission + Axle in one unit. Front wheel drive cars have transaxles, raer wheel drive have transmissions with a seperate rear axle.

Not necessary. My Porsche 928S had the transmission in the rear so it also had a transaxle. I believe the C6 Corvette is the same way.

You are correct about the Porsche. The C5 and C6 Corvettes also have the rear transaxle. Another one was the Pontiac Fiero (front wheel drive engine and transaxle mounted in the rear). I should have said "most" rear wheel drive cars have a separate axle. Oh, well, that shows how absolute statements are seldom correct!

Another rear transaxle car is the 1961 - 63 Pontiac Tempest, it used a modified Corvair transaxle.
