Sounds like a diesel after timing chain replacement

Hello

First time poster here. I have a 2006 with the 2.4 engine. It has 111280 miles on it. Timing chain was starting to make noise when I started it in the mornings. I just had the timing chain and balance shaft chains replaced and now it sounds like a diesel when it idles . What would cause this. Its going back to the shop in the morning.

Thanks in advance Randy

Welcome - sorry to hear you are having problems after getting that work done.

It's hard to say what the problem is - best to just let the shop check it out. They may have left something loose: guides/tensioner, or a defective part etc..

I'd be leery of driving it in case it has jumped a tooth or such, and ends up bending a valve or causes other damage.

I guess the shop didn't do it right.

Did they also replace the guides & oil spigot & tensioners?

Hello

Thanks for the replies. They replaced all items that came in the kits. guides - chains - tensioners . It runs great. The noise does go away when increasing the RPMs.

Thanks Randy

Does it go away after it warms up or when it revs up?

Hello
Just when it revs up. Seems to be in the area of the cam gears.

My wild guess is they forgot to release the tensioner.

You probably nailed it Don - if that is the case, would it be likely to jump a tooth or two?

Gonna have to check the chain links to the timing symbols on the sprocket and confirm the tensioner is engaged!

Update

Hello

Well just got back from the repair shop with my HHR. It was a defective tensioner. It was the one that screwed in on the back side of the head. They replaced the one that was in the timing chain kit with another new one. Now everything is quiet and it runs great.

Thanks for all the replies
Randy
