Hello, I am new to the forum and strongly considering buying an HHR. I have a big SUV right now, but with gas prices these days at $3+/gallon, something's gotta go. I am an EMT with a fire department and therefore have emergency strobe lights on my SUV now.

I was looking at the headlights that come on the HHR, and was trying to figure out some way to install a hide-a-way strobe tube in each headlight and in each tail light. Looking at pics though, it appears there is extremely limited space in both. I would prefer not to have to put the strobe tubes in the headlight housing area, as they will get washed out by the headlights. Do you think it would be possible to mount them in the parking light area?

Any suggestions? I am open to any help or feedback you all can provide. I cant say that this sole factor will determine if I get the HHR or not, but it will be a significant factor, nonetheless.

Knowing exactly what you are talking about.......there is NO ROOM in the tail light for Whelen or any other real decent strobe. The headlight housings.....there may be but it's gonna be a real b**** getting them in. You have to go through the wheel well, and back space for the socket and plug will be tight.

My suggestion.....really......skip the lights. There is a town near me where the fire department is volunteer. They fly around with their lights on scaring the crap out of people. After being a career firefighter for almost 30 years, I can tell you this...9 out of 10 times your lights don't help. You get there almost as fast without them, and it is certainly a heck of a lot safer. Read firehouse.com and see how many articles show up about volunteers getting killed responding. (Oh it happens to career too). Take your time, get there safely.

 

could you mount them behind the grill on the front and in the bumper marker lights in the rear?

 

I agree with Firewatcher. The idea of running lights and trying to fight traffic is dangerous. I've been a Paramedic/Firefighter Volunteer and Paid over 20 years, I can get there as fast driving legal as well as fast like an idiot scaring the crap out of little old ladies on a Sunday morning. The HHR doesn't need more weight thrown on it. Leave the lights and siren to the Emergency Vehicles, make your ride look cool without all the red and strobe lights.
Just my opinion.

 

I go to college in WV, and we are required by law to use lights and siren when responding to an emergency call. Everyone that does, tends to drive safely; we dont have people running people off the road or anything, but for the size area our department has to cover, I can tell you, the lights/siren and the ability to go through red lights after coming to a complete stop saves a SIGNIFICANT amount of time over regular, non-emergent driving. So the lights are a must. With proper training(EVOC) and common sense, it is no more dangerous that responding in a fire engine.

I have two Whelen LED grille lights that can go behind the grille, and I think a clear mini lightbar would be a good idea as well. I had an idea, do you know if the reverse lights can be replaced with the same red cover that the taillights use?

 

I believe from reading another post the tail lights can not be switched with out some modification..
