HHR Truck Conversion
#53
Thank you for the kind words. I live on a thousand acre cattle ranch and this will be used to haul a couple bales of hay or half a dozen bags of cubes, and general running around, etc. 28 mpg is a lot better than 12 with the big trucks. I could not come up with a good way to hinge the tail gate. For now it hangs on the two pegs that the hydraulic lift cylinders connected to and then it is fastened down to the bed with sheet metal screws. I will attach some pictures of that in a couple of days. btw, my next project is to build a crewcab, four seater, dually HHR pickup truck. I have already bought the two wrecked HHR's. One with wrecked front end and the other with a wrecked rear. The duals will be cosmetic only since it is front wheel drive. All that I have done so far is cut and paste some pictures to see what it will look like. I added this to my albun. This will be a little more challenging, but what's life about.
When you get to the tailgate of the next one I would suggest model it like an already built truck works. Get the straps. Then find pegs or use a bolt, just something that the straps can attach to up towards 3/4 to the top, use the straps to determine the correct spot, on both the bed and the tailgate itself. For the bottom you could use some round stock on the bottom sides of the tailgate and then make a half - 2/3's round cradle on the bed opening bottom corners for the round stock to sit in.

Hello
What a great looking HHR to Pickup conversion. I would like to own one like this. This is something I would have built back in my day.
Below is a photo of a '55 Nash Metropolitan I restored. I made the trailer from a 1956 Metro I bought for parts.
Back then Strohs beer was running a TV commercial for their beer using cool cars and hot blondes driving them with a case of Strohs on the back luggage rack. I had a luggage rack on the Met trailer with a case of Strohs sitting on it. I was working a deal with Strohs to include my Met in one of their ads but it never came to fruition.
