OK, next step is a 2006 HHR dimmer switch.

GM part # 15892120, List price $25.15

GM Parts Direct has it for $13.08 but add $9.95 for shipping so it's not worth it to save just a couple of bucks.

I'll order it from the dealer today and it'll probably be next week before it comes in. Unless it's unavailable because it's still early in the 2007 HHR build .

This feature was probably put in for the panel truck version for 2007. As it would probably come in real handy for delivery puposes.

Ok, the new 2007 dimmer switch is finally here and waiting for me at the dealer parts department. I'm picking it up during lunch and then we'll see if it really has the built-in dome light control. If so, then I'll probably try to wire it in sometime this week.

I picked up the new 2007 dimmer switch during lunch. A quick check with a DVM shows that there is indeed a "switch closure" across contacts A and E when the dimmer knob is pushed into the detent position.

Now I just need to look into the factory service manual again to find out which wires to connect to. If I recall correctly, one of the dimmer switch contacts will go to a ground, while the other contact will go to one of the BCM wires (BCM is inside the center console under the dash). Assuming there are no surprises (and there usually are!) it should be an easy connect.

Hopefully I will find time in the next few days to try it.

It looks like there is only one more stumbling block to completing the project. The connector that attaches to the stock 2006 dimmer switch only has 2 of the 5 pins installed in it. Those are the two needed for dimming control. I will need to add two more pins for the interior lighting switch closure on the 2007 switch. My 2006 factory manual shows a part number for the pins. At lunch I'm going to the Chevy dealer parts department to see if they can order some pins. I spoke with them on the phone and the part number the service manual gives for the pins didn't show up as a legitimate part number. I'm going to take the service manual with me which has a description of the connector and hopefully we can locate something that works.

I'm not sure if the original question was ever answered (I'm a little too lazy to read every reply, lol), but there is a way to turn all the lights on while sitting in the driver seat... It took me forever to figure it out. The rotating switch to control the display lighting has to be turned all the way to the right, and then it will click and all the lights come on... Again, sorry if this question was already answered.
And I'm also not sure, but I have an 07, and people were talking about the 07 dimmer switch, so if that makes a difference, sorry about that, too...

Yes you are correct we are talking about the 07 switch. But what we are trying to do is see if will work in the 06. In the 06 you can not turn on the light with the switch for some reason.
