The magnet idea is great! I found some really cheap at a shop that has just about everything, Princess Auto (Canadian outfit). They were "rare earth" magnets, really strong, almost as good a color match as yours and cost me $3.88 for a pack of 10. Instead of the nylon washer you used between the magnet and the lock, I used one of the fairly flat stick-on clear rubber pads like you use on cupboard doors, except ones just about as big as the magnet. Creates a good seal so locks won't freeze in the winter and allows me to get this really strong magnet off fairly easily of I need the lock.

I personally haven't used a key on my car door since 1998. That's nearly 10 years. They shouldn't even put them on cars anymore. If you have OnStar can't they unlock your doors for you? You could also use a slim jim.

I think you are right but not everyone has OnStar. I did not buy it but like you it has been eons since I used a key to unlock my cars. Never had an issue of power failure either to warrant it.
