TUOA- That ugly Onstar antenna
#3
I'm gonna paint the land radio (front) antenna if I can get it off/loose. I'm wary of pulling on the headliner much since I'm afraid I'll blow the airbags. I may be able to pull out the sunfroof/microphone panel and access it.
The XM receiver issue I addressed in another thread.

How is pulling on the headliner going to blow the air bags??

no I wasn't being sarcastic...there was debate a little while ago about that rear antenna also being both the XM and the OnS...and I was almost positive that they are the same...as in if you have XM but no OnS you still have that thing back there just no little stub...

Stub = Onstar
Blob = XM
Stub -n- Blob = XMOnstar
Front antenna = AM/FM
About the air bags....
I have side air bags. It looks like to fully pull the headliner down, I need to slightly pull the door pillar panels out. I was afraid of getting "bagged" in the process. I guess I could pull the AB fuse but what if I set off a sensor that sends the signal once I plug the fuse back in?

Having cut open more than a few cars in my day, I don't think you have too much to worry about. If you really know your GM service tech well, ask him the location of the air bag detonator/actuators. They may be in the upper section of the pillars, although sometimes they locate the seatbelt tensioners there. It does take quite a bit of pressure to blow them, but better to be safe than sorry.
