Hi folks, similar to a thread that was started by 08BlkSS, I have a few questions re. installing aftermarket HU's.

My '06 has the premium sound 7 speaker pkg. and no OnStar.

From my old car, I have an Alpine single din 9857, and a Sirius Sportster, along with my iPOD cable that went through my glovebox that connected to my iPOD.
My Alpine is less then a year old, and I want to install it and my Sirius Sportster in my HHR. I went to a shop and I was told that I'd need 2 connectors/adapter modules: 1 for the head unit and a second to allow me to run the factory sub. I was told that they were "about $200.00 each".

I'm not an audiophile, I just want a nice, clean sound and the ability to listen to my Sirius and my iPOD. I'm not really considering adding 4 new 6.5's and an amp. (maybe down the road, if the sound quality starts to degrade)


Do I really need 2 adapters? I don't care if I lose the chimes.
If so, what is the actual cost, and where can I buy them (online?) resonably (part #'s as well please)?

Check out Crutchfield.com, they are very good and have excellent tech/phone support. Click the "SHOP, Car audio & Video Section", and niput your car info. It'll tell you what radios fit and stuff you need to complete the install. They evem give you vehicle specific printouts for your ride.

You'll probably need a PAC C2R-GM11 adapter ($120), Scocche Faceplate Kit #142GM1587B ($20), an antenna adapter ($13), and if you have steering wheel controls, a PAC's SWI-X adapter ($70).

I had to spend close to $300 for the adapters for my 08' SS. I used them and did my own install for the first time. I'll never pay someone else to do it again. Here's mine:

You're exactly right about Crutchfield. I did a "live chat" with someone there (Clay), and he quoted the exact same items as you did. $222.00 total is not cheap, but I'll bite the bullet and grab it all at once.

If you order it all at once maybe they'll give you a deal on the adapter harness. Mine was listed for $176 but they gave it to me at $116, because I was ordering everything. I didn't notice till checkout.

The guys at Crutchfield reccommended the SWI JACK for my car, as it's supposedly specific for my Alpine (as well as a few other makes) deck.

I added 4 new speakers, as I want a little more kick.
I'm trying to avoid the next step: an amp and a box!

OK, I'm stupid. wtf is an HU?

google won't help, wikpedia won't help (othere than Hungary).

 

HU=Headunit(car stereo/radio)

 

For anyone out there thinking about an HU + door speaker change-do it!
I have a little more bass, clearer sound, and it's louder as well. A far cry from the performance that an amp plus subs would give, but a DEFINATE improvement over stock. Plus you gotta go with Sirius!

 

Looks really good, nice job. What a difference a new HU makes on the sound, huh!

 

When you replace the hu, does the new unit work with the steering wheel controls?
