Back Up Camera??

Has anyone used a back up camera that is linked to an aftermarket headunit. I just purchased a new unit that has an video input for the camera and has a "Backsight Camera Control Line" coming off the radio harness. I need to know how to hook this up the best way, so that the camera will turn on and pop up on the screen while in reverse. Don't really want to add a seperate swith for this..

I think hook it to one of my reverse wires in the tail lights.

Any help would be great!

The one I have hooks to the + side of the back up lamps. but I think I am going to hook it to a switch so I can turn it on when i want to so I can see what my trailer is doing going down the road.

The Metra GMOS-LAN-04 adapter for the pioneer systems has wiring built into it for the camera reverse wire and for navigation systems as well. That is what I used for mine. Works great, shift into reverse and the camera pops up on screen. I can also select the camera directly from my in dash dvd source menu.

Note: The Metra GMOS-LAN-04 adapter for the pioneer systems does have a wire for reverse for use with a backup camera; however, it will not work on a manual transmission HHR.

I called Metra when I was not getting any voltage on this wire when I put the transmission into reverse. I asked if it was because I had a manual transmission, and he said yes. It sure would of been nice to know prior to running the backup camera cable/wire, since I could of ran both wires at the same time, instead of doing it twice and removing everything again.

I have a Pioneer X950BH GPS unit and it comes with connections for the backup camera. I used a wireless camera and it has several connections. At the head unit there is a receiver with power, video feed that goes to the small receiver box. At the rear, I mounted the camera inside at the top of the rear window. The trigger to turn on the camera and thus turn on the receiver taps into the reverse lights power line. There is a separate +12v DC and ground and they were fed off and grounded inside the left rear panel.

On mine the camera power and ground had to be separate from the backup light circuits. I did not feel like fishing a video feed from the back to the front. I used the recommendations of the stereo shop I have dealt with for several years and all worked great.

Its is illegal to watch any video while driving your car even if that vid is from a backup camera. Its OK for passengers to watch whatever they want so long as the driver can not see it too.

That's why I really wondered when they started coming out with in-dash stereos that had vid screens in them.

When I was driving semi I saw some folks in a dodge van with a small color TV on their dash and they were watching a porn movie. I made a comment on the CB that I wished I had a similar TV so I could watch a movie while driving down the road and a state trooper came on and said whats the 20 on the 4wheeler with the TV on the dash. So I gave him a mile marker.

In just a very short time here he came red lights and siren to get them. A few miles later he had them on the side of the road taking everything in the van out to put on the ground. I guess he must have figured they were stoned to be dumb enough to have a TV on the dash.
