Dual 12" Kicker CVR vs. 12" Kicker L7
#22
zx1000.1/L7 Install
After a few calls to kicker I was able to get some good advice on how to set things up. I'll write that up in here later today. But here's what's going on. I am starting to notice that this 1 L7 doesn't hit as hard as the 2 cvr's (as previously mentioned as a possibility) but I still get some darn good knock out of it. Still get roof/cargo door flex but not as bad. And to be completely honest my cvr's where just ridiculously loud when I cranked it so I'm good. It's acutally a minium difference to where I think I'll be the only to notice it. I also get half my cargo space back (my goal for this project) which came in handy later that day for taking the christmas tree n decorations back to storage. I opted to sit the box in the driver's side corner because...
A) Where the 60/40 split it is, all I have to do is just fold down the 60 side and front passenger seat and I have plenty of space.
B) With it in that corner, the port has plenty of clearence for airflow.
C) With the speaker facing up I get 2 more inches of space from the box to the edge of the cargo area.
D) I think it just looks cooler with the box facing up as well.
I cut a piece of some non skid material (that stuff that comes in rolls and you use them in your kitchen cabinets and drawers) to keep the box from sliding over. Took a few sharp turns and take offs for a test and the box was still place.
I opted to take out the polyfil but I think I'm going to put it back in. I couldn't really notice a difference. Also, my buddy is going 2 sell me his kinetik battery n relay so that should help out with power as because there is definitly some dimming going on when the bass hits.
On a side note, there was this funky smell coming from the box. Any of you sound tech specialists have any thoughts on this?
I called the shop and they said it was just the voice coils breaking in. Not quite sure about those guys since how they initially set the gain was higher than what Kicker CS told me... (audio shop said to put it @ 3/4 and I was to control bass from HU) More to come later on another post...
And thank you everyone for helping me out on this one!!!

Lookin good man.
You will get slightly louder by firing the port back. Not sure if you will notice by ear though, may be less than 1 dB gain.
My tests showed 2 optimal positions for high SPL. The one that sounded best while being loud is Subs Up, Ports Back. thats what I have now.
The second is subs to the side and ports up, but sounds bad.
The smell you are experiencing could be the coating on the voicecoil heating up. Most of the time it is harmless.
The glue and coatings will heat up and reset then the smell will go away.
If it doesnt go away you are pushing it too hard.

Everyone be safe and have a happy new year!
After Trial...
Just got back from driving around with it... Now it honestly sounds louder then the dual cvr's and my remote bass knob is cranked to noon. Probably a combinations of putting the polyfil back in and as Ed recommended placing the sub up and the port firing back. I'm really stoked about this now. Created more space in the cargo area and got a bit more knock out of her...
