i also noticed that the rear headrests are bigger than the front ones. Possible to swap the front and rear and get a 7" instead?

That's interesting....

What about the angle of the headrests? Are they at a good angle for viewing? I guess I really should pay more attention to the inside. I've never even sat in the backseat to see how it is.

the monitors are adjustable, or at least the ones that I've seen. You can tilt them up/down to get the desired angle for viewing.

Yes, I did it myself, and I pretty much just winged it as I had never done anything like that before. Of course I put some time into it first.

I took the headrest covers off, then cut the foam out where I wanted the moitor to set. If you don't take out enough foam the monitor will protrude too much. If you take out too much, then it will be recessed. I wanted them to be flush. You just have to cut some foam, test fit, cut some more, test fit, etc...

Once you feel you've cut enough, you put the headrest cover back on, then cut an "X" in the fabric for the monitor.

One thing I did to get them flush and look factory was I put the monitor bezel behind the fabric. Just make sure you cut off the corners of the bezel so they don't poke through the fabric. I actually glued the bezel to the headrest foam. Then after I cut my "X" I slipped the monitor into the bezel and friction of the fabric between the bezel and the monitor is actually whats holding the monitor in place. Trust me, they're not going anywhere.

I've been researching my options on how to get video in the HHR and I haven't really decided yet. When I did the one in my truck I saved about $1100 so it was a no brainer to buy the pieces and install it myself. Now there are so many options out there to go a cheaper route. It may not look as good, but it's a lot cheaper. In fact, I was looking at THIS yesterday. I know it won't look as good, but if I could figure out a way to make those parts work with a permanent install it would be very inexpensive.

Here's a photo of our 9" headrest monitors, purchased off Ebay (already mounted in headrests). The grey is a shade too dark, but the price was right.
