wasn't trying to be snooty, just trying to be funny. I used to have cb radios in my vehicles and at home in the years before I got my ham ticket. I don't have a pic of it yet but I replaced my factory stereo with an aftermarket and I have a dual band Yaesu with the face remote mounted under the new stereo covering the pocket that was part of the dash kit. I have the main part of the radio mounted inside the dash under the steering wheel with an external speaker also mounted outside the dash under the steering wheel. I did have a lip mount antenna on the rear hatch but the mount started to rust so I bought a shorter antenna and drilled the roof. the hardest part I found to installing the radio was finding a good ground under the dash that was easy to get to. there is an older post on here talking about ham radio and I think I had a pick of my first install with an older dual band actually mounted in the pocket under the stereo. as far as the person talking about getting you license, it has never been easier now that there is no longer a morse code test to take, only a written test for each class. as for the question about radios, there are probably radios out there that cover the 10 meter ham band that have been opened up to cover the 11 meter band (CB radio).

Yes, that is correct the test is real easy. I was challenged by a friend on a Friday at ~5:30PM to join her for a test the next morning at 8:30AM. Never read a book or took a class.

That night I logged onto the internet and took a bunch(10-12) of practice tests. When I got to the point of passing three in a row I went home for the night, the next morning I took three more practice tests and passed on 2 of them. So I went and took the test – only missed one question.

So yes, the test is easy, but I feel a bit inadequate in my actual knowledge and have never used it.

Most all clubs administer the tests so it should not be difficult to find an outlet.

Notice I said "we" to add my mix to the fun.

This sounds like a good idea. I look forward to seeing photos soon.

here is the pic from the original install with my older radio. I took out the inside of the pocket and enlarged the opening so the radio would fit inside. I will get a pic of the newer install with the new radio.

Here is the pic of the new radio, the opening from the previous install was slightly too large for the new radio to fit properly so I took advantage of the remote control unit and used a piece of abs to cover the entire opening and mounted the bracket onto it. It came out a little off center but I will fix that some day when I have nothing better to do.... now I just need to find a place to mount a mobile HF rig like maybe a FT857.

Doesnt the weight of the GPS pull the vent closed? Also, I have an air cleaner on mine and it keeps falling off.

I went a different route when I did mine after I hard wired it to the power outlet I put in a 3 amp in line fuse then ran the wire up to the glove box.On the backside of the lid there is a little shock absorber for the arms.I just slid it up some till the lid opens just enough to see my GPS.The lid is still low enough that it does not block your vision of the road.

All I did was put a bit of velcro on the inside of box and backside of the GPS when I use it I just set it up and aline the velcro. When I park it just pull it off the velcro and lay it down and shut the lid out of site.

Best part of doing it this way is the screen is always shaded and is nice and bright on the sunny days in any direction you drive.
