sub questions..

who has kept the stock sub set up but swapped out the actual sub? what did you put in there as a replacement? im guessing only shallow mount subs will fit? i dont really want to cut in to the box and do much modifications. Im looking for best ideas and sound options

You will have to work on the box. It is plastic and will flex with an aftermarket sub. Plenty of 8 inch options, but just to swap the sub and not also its. amp is not beneficial. I added a lot of sound damper back there and the sub woke up. I am still using the factory system until i complete my after market install.
But keep in mind, the most upgrade to do is add strength to the box and sound dampen it. Then you can shop for a sub and amp.
That is my humble opinion.

No room under seats for anything. I forgot to show you my setup yesterday, amps are in the tray above the spare tire.

you will need a dual voice coil 2 ohm sub for replacement..while your in there cover the box with deadener and poly fill the insides for a small improvement

is it better to make a custom box to fit in the same area as the factory one? is it worth it? or should i just use the stock box and polyfill it like suggested..?

Not much area there to work with...once you start using the correct materials the overall interior volume will be reduced unless you use fiberglass...all depends on how much work/time you want to put into it..for the amount you will get out of it.

The questions you are asking are user dependent. We added a serious amount of sound dampening materials and the factory sub woke up . Many have asked us if this really was the factory system they are listening to . It made that much difference . We only did it to make sure it would be dead when we fired up the aftermarket sub .
So the question is back to you .... Is it worth spending 1k to 1.5 k to have a custom cabinet build where the factory box is located . Or spend 5 hours of you personal time to get to the sub cabinet , reinforce it and add the materials needed to add weight to the box .
You will not build a better box then is there already.... The fitment is perfect . GM Engineers have already complete the work .
Take the car apart and see what you have back there ...
It is very straight forward .......
I have added some pictures for you to get an idea of what you will be looking at .

Before and after .......

I added deadner and polyfill to my factory box and it certainly gave a better sound to the factory sub BUT still no real amount of volumn. Since you before were wanting to do 4 subs I just do not see the factory sub being loud enough for you ever. Eventually I put a 10" sub in mine but it was short lived as the amp I had used with it had an issue and fried the sub. While it was there it did sound much better. I have a friend with a Focal 11" sub adapted into his but I have only heard his system with his front subs also playing so I cannot actually comment on the sound. I do believe that it should sound really good though. His sub is not sitting behind the factory grill though.

Eventually I built a full fiberglass box into the factory spot. It was a 1cft ported box built specifically for a Morel Ultimo SC 10" sub but I never got around to getting my hands on one of those. I did run a Polk MM 8" sub in it insted. This boxe was built so that the sub stayed behind the factory panel and to make that happen I cut metal behind the sub box and built a fiberglass pocket in the metal hole to allow the magnet of the 10" to sit back there. The 8" did not need this recessed area. There are many slim 8's and 10's that will fit bach there and there is always the option of coming thru the factory panel.

Don't mind the white dot that was for another thread to show where the factory amp sat
