Various HHR Sub Installs...
#271
Has anyone ever tried installing their subs into the interior of the rear lift gate?
Looks to me that there should be some un-used space inside there that could be used to install subs, and then would not interfere with main cargo area...but I've never taken the interior panel taken off to see whats behind it !
Thoughts ?
Anyone tried that approach?
Pros versus cons ??

hey guy, i gave that a try a while back, with little success. i managed to mount a 5 1/4'' component in a fiberglass enclosure. there is very little room behind the panel to work with, but you might be able to sink a shallow mount sub in there. other concerns are: weight of the enclosure on the hatch, proper air space, mounting, and vibrations. it is a cool idea, but i'd look for other places to hide some bass, like the stock location in the rear quarter

Lunchbox -
Thanks for that info - saves me much investigative work and I'll seek other options.
I don't want to give up any cargo space.
I've got a 2006 Victory Red Special Edition, with 'std stereo of that time period,' w/o sub in the left rear interior panel.
I'll look thru the prior posts and try to get some ideas as to how to add subwoofer amp to my existing system and mount sub in the (now empty) opening.
All suggestions appreciated.
Thanks !

On 3/17/08 I posted photos of my solution. I also did not want to lose any trunk space, nor did I want anything that would prevent me from getting to the 2 storage bins or the large hidden cargo area. I valiantly tried to use the existing sub location with no success. (I tried many speakers, including free air as well as filling the space with DynaMat, insulation, etc to seal it as well as possible.)
Ultimately, I used an Infinity Kappa 10 inch in a .5 cu. ft. enclosure I made which is shaped to conform to the back of the rear seat. This way, no air space is wasted. I have a thin piece of plywood on top with 2 holes that fit under the rear headrest, so when the seat folds forward, it brings the sub box with it.
I also mounted my amps on a piece of wood on the other side of the rear seat, so they get proper ventilation. I cover them with the hats for security reasons.
The base is great-enough to shake the car. And it takes up very little cargo space and I can still fold either or both seats back and put big things, like a mattress, on top.

This is the first time showing my car online and it hasn't been in a show yet. Let me know what yall think. It is a 2008 HHR SS i bought in 2008 off ebay for $13,900 with only 6000 miles on it. Since then I have put in 4x Kenwood Excelon 1600w 10''s, 4x Kenwood Excelon 300w 6.5'' 3-way, 2x Kenwood 1800w mono amps, 1x Kenwood 720w stereo amp, 2x power acoustik 7'' monitors in headrest, a Pioneer nav/dvd/back-up camera/bluetooth indash unit, 7 color LED street-glow underglow kit, LED pods in all doors, Stage 1 turbo upgrade, and a Magnaflow 3'' exhaust. I plan to replace the pioneer unit with kenwood and replace the streetglow kit with a ledglow 14 pc. kit. (underbody/wheel wells/interior/grills

For those that want stealth and to save cargo space this is an option that I am working on for my car. These rings are for 8" Polk MM's. There IS enough space to make the 1.2 cft that I need but without cutting I would have to use every nook and cranny of space to get there. So in the second pic I have outlined where I intent to cut out metal. There is 4" of extra space near the window and even more depth below as the body bows out towards the mid height of the car. I can get a minimum of .25cft extra this way. I MAY choose to use only two subs but three can fit even without cutting.
