Is it a straight forward swap out one for the other, or are the wire connectors different and do you have to tell the car it has a different oem head unit?

Try e-bay, always seems to be a fairly good selection available.

I saw several base model mp3 phono plug style like I have. LKQ seems to be good about attaching vin number of vehicle removed from. I bought a couple stereos from them when I was working on Caprice. But I didn't see any for HHR with USB port. I don't get GM, friend has base model 04 silverado and his stereo displays song title and artist from radio station. I like my HHR, but sometimes wish I would have looked a little longer for LT model. Seems like I've got to upgrade everything on car just paid 11k for.

Website for OEM radios

You may to check out this website:

http://replacementradios.com/product...oducts_id=1413

They sell new and refurbished OEM radios for all makes. The link I have here is for the Cobalt/HHR CD/USB radio I believe you are looking for. It should plug right in but you will have to have a dealer unlock it for you with a scan tool.

I found one on eBay, but you'll need to have the dealer reprogram it to work in your car.
