Wiring

I searched and could not find, though I know it has been posted before.

What is the wiring for the 7 speaker premium system? I believe the sub in the back powers all the speakers. But, does the head use RCA preamps or speaker wires to go to the back? I want to use my new head internal amp for the doors and have run a separate RCA (actually 3) wires along with a trigger wire for the new sub amp.

In other words, are there speaker wires by the head as well as by the amp? And what are their color codes?

There are no RCA's off the stock headunit. I have my system wired through a line converter thats tapped in the amp. The stock amp is mounted to the sub box. You can also check here::: https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/audio-video-17/direct-wiring-2006-hhr-7-speaker-system-amp-740/

The wires come out of the stock deck and then into the amp. Not sure of colors though. You might check with SoCal Mike.

That is good for me. It means that I can run the speakers right to my new head unit, and if I later decide to amp those speakers, then there are also wires in the back for them. Or I can plug into the speaker harness to the back then jump the harness right to the individual speaker leads that are presently connected to the amp.

Are you bypassing the stock amp ? We have the metra interfaces for premium and non premium, completely plug and play. I would like an aftermarket deck in mine, but these interfaces really aren't cheap .

I know. Luckily I have a close friend in the business so I get a break. I plan on using the internal amp for the tweeters and speakers (I replaced them with 6 3/4 Rockford Fosgates from my last car). Sub wise, he will get me the smallest most powerful one he can find and we will mount it next to the battery so it does not take up any cargo space. I have already run all of the wires. I have a couple of subs to try in the stock location, and we will try padding, foam, wood enclosure, etc in an attempt to get good base without using an outside box. In the worst case scenerio, I will leave that sub and have it set up with plugs that bypass it. Then, I will be able to use my enclosed box that I have by plugging it in, then if I need to remove it for more cargo space, I will still have the other speaker in the stock location.

I checked with him today, and sadly the Metra wiring is on back order. Hopefully next week...
