is it worth it?

Do it!
Change them and you'll be glad. The stock Pioneer sound system speakers are paper dual cone hunks of junk. Go for a 2-ohm rated 6.75" speaker (Infinity, JBL) and maximize the factory amp output. I went with JBL GTO series and they absolutely blow away the factory paper weights.

I went to inifiniti 602i from crutchfield and they give you everything to mount them. The hole for the speaker is really big for a 6 1/2 but not enough for a 6 3/4 unless you cut it. It also really helps to insulate behind the speakers and around the speakers (to cover up the extra large hole). You will be suprised if you just insulate the stock speakers.. But, if you go with crutchfield use this referral number and save an extra $20. p74a5-1qydu-74t08 The infinitis alone brought so much more clarity and the bass is good for stock with the insulation. I don't have a sub in my LS. Good luck and email me how it goes. John

Ok, so tomorrow I'm going to replace the door speakers and now after looking at all people that replace the sub...
Did all of you just use the factory wiring and pop in a new sub?
If you have an extra amp, did you use the sub to send the signal to the amp and get the hot wire from there?
So many questions for my new toy

Theres a sticky thread about patching into the premium system factory wiring, the line level wires going to the amp. Theres also a great post about swapping the factory sub: https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/audio-video-17/sub-install-195/#post11216
You have to take out a few interior panels and remove the sub enclosure.
Im guessing you could just replace the speaker with another 8" 2ohm sub, but that wouldnt give you much improvement. Thats why most go for more aftermarket bits.
I have the base system, so Im looking at patching into the rear speaker wires, to an amp, then hopefully to a sub installed in the factory location. I was hoping a shallow 10" sub would fit, but it looks like the GM sub enclosure doesnt have the required interior volume. Most 10" subs spec at least a .7 cubic foot box, but the GM one looks to be about half that. Im not decided on what to do yet.

Ok, sometimes you go to the show, and it's not worth the price of admission!
This is worth it!
Replaced the factory Pioneer speakers with Alpine 6 1/2 speakers in the doors...WOW
Now you want the real wow factor...Dynamat! Add that to your doors and you'll hear your speakers sing. So far have only done the doors and rear hatch but that is leaps and bounds an improvement to the system.
Stay tuned, going to add a JBL 8" sub in place of the Pioneer and more Dynamat in the back to deaden the wheel wells and rear quarters.
