horrible screeching from front brakes

Over the last week my brakes have developed a really loud screeching noise that you can hear from quite a distance. At first it was only once in a while and now it happens about half the time. When I had new tires put on last month, the the mechanic said I had about 40% left on the brakes. I wonder if something got trapped in the pad/rotor or if the caliper is stuck. I'm going to stop by the mechanic later today to get it checked out. The brakes still stop fine and there is no vibration or shudder. Very odd.

Sounds to me a lot like the pads are worn out ... but once again, this is something where you really have to see it for yourself. One thing, though, is on brakes, they build in these noisemaking shims so you know when they'll need replacing; sounds to me like you might be getting down there, but once again, without seeing it, I couldn't tell you if the discs are warped or if they are otherwise damaged (i.e. the rear discs on my Firehawk have grooves b/c the previous owner drove it around with the E-brake on ... and no vibration or shudder or anything "out of the ordinary" in terms of feel btw) and that could cause noise, or if it's just worn, or if something got on there, or what.

Either way, good luck to ya!

Just replaced mine at 38K. Same exact issue, horrible screeching but still would stop fine. Almost like it happened over night..fine one day, gone the next.

One note, seems the inner pad wear more that the outer, so just looking thru the mag spoke at the outer pad material thickness, is not an accurate check.

Thanks for sharing your similar experience - I should be hearing from the garage shortly.

It was just a brake pad replacement. They were able to machine the rotors. Cost was about $190 for the front two wheels. Hopefully this will last me another 40K miles.

what kind of pads did you replace the OEM with? I just noticed a slight noise on mine yesterday. I have 32k on my SS.
