Pulsating brake mystery - one for the experts
#21
I think a cleaning with brake cleaner might not be a bad idea every year or so to help get some of the dust out of there and prevent possible sticking. I bought mine new and back up daily to get out of my garage, not a short driveway either. Plus many other times throughout the day. Mine were also way out of adjustment.

mine were dry, but did have brake dust, (so they were working enough to make brake dust, that was washed off with Brake Kleen.
My adjusters have factory grease on the threads & are free to adjust on back up/hit brakes dealios. They just don't... I think I have em spoiled..

I tell ya, sometimes it's the brand of aftermarket rotors. I had this happen to me once. 3 sets of rotors from 2 stores, same brand. ALL WARPED right from the box. Bad QC for that company and/or somebody said due to stacking the new rotors flat instead of on end.
Either way, I switched brands and those rotors were good right out of the box.
Something to consider.

(food for thought) Since the adjuster winds out from it's enclosed threaded other half, & only then exposing more threads on the adjuster rod.. I can't see how brake dust should affect their working.
(edit): If they needed to wind IN, yes dust could restrict their movement.
Of course if you meant dust between the lining & drum, Yes that could be the problem..
And agree cleaning them out, is best...

Good info. I've only had my 07 HHR a short time and haven't tackled the issue yet. I was thinking that softer brake pads might help after changing the rotor. My theory is that the rotor warps because of overheating, as most manufacturers use a hard pad. The overheating could also cause rotor cracking or warp if they get hit with water while hot.
Does that make sense; could it be a common contributor to the pulsating problem?
