Going to play tourist in Toronto

Hubby and I are going to be visiting for 4 days in mid/late September, as part of a 2-leg 20th anniversary trip. The first leg is New York City.

We are looking for suggestions on things to do, "not to miss" places, maybe a city tour?

We will have a rental car. Would love to meet anyone who's available.

But what we need most is a recommendation for decent lodging. We don't ask for much more than a small frig, continental breakfast, and cleanliness. The hotel prices in NY are killing me!!! Please tell me it's not that much in Toronto?

Admin, feel free to move this to the lounge, if nec.

Toronto itself is one of the most expensive cities in Canada to live in.

If you want to stay right downtown, it's going to be expensive (hotels don't usually switch to off season rates until October).

Shouldn't be as bad as New York, but don't expect to save huge amounts, especially if the Canadian dollar stays at or above the US dollar.

Go see the phantom of the opera if it's in town then. We saw it in 1998 when we were in Canada for the F1 race in Montreal. That's a "not to miss" while in Toronto!

Assuming you are driving here, which route are you taking? What towns are you passing through?
For reasonable hotels, try doing a search for ones in the west end near Pearson International Airport. Count on $125 per night for a decent place. Downtown will be around $180. There are some for as low as $60, but wouldnt recommend them.
Check out www.toronto.com for searching events during your stay and other info.
For restaurants or bars, theres a few areas: king street, bloor street, college street, yonge street, danforth, lots more.
Shopping: bloor/yorkville for the ritzy places too rich for me, some big malls with nice stores are Yorkdale, Sherway gardens.
Parking can be difficult downtown, TTC (subway/streetcars/buses) is often a good option, the system is fairly easy to navigate.
Larger theatres are on king, yonge,

Thanks so much. We are re-thinking the whole idea, possibly to celebrate a year from now after having saved up more $$ and then we can do it up right!
