There is just one inner seal on the stub shaft and one outer seal over the axle

The stub and it’s cup go like this

The outer and inner seals

But what is the major issue if the outer seal isn't flush with the case?
Is it because the lip of the seal isn't on the machined surface of the axil ?

Could the stub be backwards? Looks like the ends are different lengths.

It appears it just might be different, from one end or the other

OK went back to first post.
Seal depth is not in question. It's the play between axil and case.
For that axil to drop down I would think a bushing in the case is worn or it's not supported correctly.

I would like to see a new picture with a new seal installed without the axil installed and go from there.

I found this video to understand installing a new axil and seals for this model trans. Yes this is for a 4T40E not the 4T45E, but it all looks the same.
The splined stub shaft is symmetrical also.
It's long, so jump to the areas you would like to look at.
I looked at 4:49 and 16:20
