The new solenoids, filter, and axle shaft seals have been installed.

I disassembled the driver side suspension, removed the engine cradle, and pulled the old transmission off, with some help from OldBlue, who came over to assist. Here it is on the transmission jack:

A view of the flywheel on the engine:

The engine is being held up by another Harbor Freight tool, the engine support:

I pulled the stub shafts out of the old transmission. You sure won't mix the two shafts up, there is quite a difference in length:

Hopefully tomorrow the "new" transmission starts getting installed in the car.

I have one question: Do I drain the fluid out of the torque converter (from the junkyard trans) and refill it with new fluid before putting it on the trans input shaft?

Fluid in the TC is as old as the rest of it. At least a gallon.

I can’t do much anymore, and my back is messed up from snow duty, but it was like the old car club days helping a friend work on his hot rod.
Yes I suggest draining the torque converter and refilling it with fresh fluid, that doesn’t happen with a drain and fill.
Keep at it !

Ok, thanks for the advice.

I will drain out the fluid that's in the torque converter and pour in an equal amount of new fluid.

What is the procedure for how much to fill it? If I lay it flat and fill up to the top of the input shaft hole, a lot will pour out as I tilt it up vertically to slide it onto the input shaft.

Or fill it while it's vertical until it starts to flow out?

I assume the pump will fill it to the right level once you turn the car on?

I've never removed a torque converter and refilled it before so any advice is appreciated. The factory service manual doesn't talk about filling procedure for the torque converter.

Different methods, I have just filled to the hole while the TC is vertical, then followed with fluid fill procedure by filling to the level plug.

Turn the converter over in a bucket and let it drain.
Measure how much came out and refill with the same amount with the snout facing up.
Might take a little time do to air trapped in the converter housing (shell).

That's what I ended up doing. Not a lot came out at first pour, and then I let it sit on a bucket and drain until it was only dripping very slowly. Maybe the junkyard drained it when it was removed from the vehicle.

I then poured in new fluid with it laying down and then tilted it up and it would seep into the converter. I repeated this until it no longer "took" any more fluid and was even with the bottom of the input hole when raised vertical. I only had to add less than a quart.

I forgot to mention, the transmission went back on last night. It was easy with the transmission jack, since you can raise it up and tilt it in two directions.

Now to replace the engine cradle and hook everything back up. I have the new cradle bolt and nut for the one that spun..

And hopefully remember to fill the transmission.

Hey, Steve, did you check the transmission fluid? There a reminder.
Did you get that spun cage nut out?

This would be somewhat vital...
