Replacement Trans: First Time Start Up

Just about finished replacing the old auto trans in the 2011/2.2 and was wondering if there are any special suggestion's for the first start up and first test drive. I know the computer has to "re-learn' the trans but was wondering if there is anything special I need to do. Besides making sure the trans ATF level is correct. The replacement trans came from a 2.2 Cobalt and I have replaced the two shift solenoids inside of the side cover and the ATF filter.

As usual thanks for all the great help!

Seems like you’re ready to go, 7 quarts of dextron VI automatic transmission fluid, new filter, gasket .
Start it up let the engine idle for a minute, shift the transmission thru the selector range with your foot firmly on the brake pedal.
then shift it into the direction you want to go and let your foot slowly off the brake pedal.
let the HHR move until you’re on to the road and the stop, shift into drive and slowly let off the brake pedal and then drive it around the block! Bring the HHR back and inspect for any leaks or problems, let turn off the ignition and let the engine cool off, check again for any leaks .
Start it up, and drive normal for a 10 mile test drive to let the engine and transmission warm up fully, then check the fluid level. Check again for any leaks.
Enjoy the ride! If you torqued all the mount bolts and pan bolts and transmission to engine bolts , you should be fine. But my OCD would make me retorque those bolts.

Success!!! New/Old trans installed and drives great, shifting fine in all gears. Many thanks to all on this website for all the help and support!

This is how I did the first start up, car was on jack stands and level.
  • Installed battery with fire extinguishers at the ready
  • Turned key on and checked for sparks/smoke
  • Shifted into all gears, trans in park started car
  • Checked for leaks/sparks/smoke
  • Shifted into neutral allowed everything to warmed up
  • Shifted into drive/reverse and back to neutral
  • Checked ATF level (had to add another 2 quarts for a total of 9)
  • Turned off, one final check for leaks, wheels on/jack stands removed
  • Went for test drive about 15 miles returned one final check for leaks
Car checks out good, shifts fine in all gears and no leaks or unusual noises.

Again thanks to all for all the help!

Atta boy!! Now keep it clean and drive it often!! Enjoy the ride! Recheck that fluid level just to be sure! Perhaps the torque converter drank up those extra 2 quarts!

One last thing, any suggestions for what to do with the old trans? The pan got punctured and ran low on fluid, no reverse and was stuck in a low gear.
