08 HHR Head On Collision

My wife and daughter were in a head on collision where both parties were travelling 55mph and the cars hit grill to grill. The other vehicle was a late 80's early 90's model Chevy Astro. My wife and daughter were mostly fine. My daughter did not suffer any injuries from the accident other than the force of the collision caused infection in her ears to pierce the brain barrier giving her meningitis (she is fine now thankfully). That is not directly relatable to the quality of the car though. My wife suffered a broken left arm and dislocated wrist, from stiff-arming the steering wheel, and a broken bone in her right foot. The skin on her knee sheered off as well, but was able to be sewn back on. All in all we are very thankful that they survived and their injuries were minor taking the type of accident into account. I am very pleased with the crash protection in the HHR. In fact, the only thing that the little HHR did not get G's in at iihs.org (insurance institute for highway safety) was the right foot/leg. It got an A. I now trust those crash test dummy results much more than I might have in the past. I just thought all of you HHR owners here would like to know how safe your little ride is.

See the speedometer is right at 55.

The seat where my daughter was sitting (in a car seat) was warped and the plastic was broken around the latch but it held securely.

Notice the whole roof rippled

So glad everyone was OK! Even though i'm sure it was hard to post these pics, it's nice to see what kind of vehicle we are dealing with safety wise. Makes you realize how fast things can happen. Be careful out there.

Glad all are OK. Goes to show how well those crumple zones work. That's a pretty short hood!

Looks like the car took most of the force. Glad you guys are okay and not more seriously injured. Looks to have been a devastating crash.

Did the back doors still open?

Wow! It's amazing that there were no serious injuries! What a great little car that is for protection I guess. Glad that everyone was ok.
