I do have a 5 speed though, as I feel more comfortable with a manual transmission in the Colorado climate.
Hi Deb

I was amazed at how well that automatic performed, I alternated between Drive and the I (forget what that stands for). The I gear really works nice for slowing down on a somewhat slippery surface, it really slows the car nicely while coming down a mountain, rather than trying to brake.

Forgot to add the picture from last year.

Now that looks so great in the snow, Not that Tom's didn't, it looked good also. But you guys are freaking me out, I would be scared to death to drive in that. It is 55 degrees here tonight, and I am cold. Cali people can't even drive in rain much less snow! Todd (Uma)

To CourthouseDeb,

How dare you leave that beautiful vehicle in the snow. Build a garage around it. Better yet, park it in the house and you stay outside. Geeze. How rude. That poor car...

Tom...from what I understand...the automatics do quite well in I (Intermediate) gear as well. I've owned nothing but stick shifts the past 20 years, so it was only natural for me to continue that trend. I test drove an automatic to see how I liked it, but I just preferred the manual after having driven both. The HHR is geared low and when it's really cold and icy, I find it easier to start out in 2nd gear and Smoke takes off like a champ with no spinning at all. Love the pic of the white car in the snow...looks great.

Uma...I just had to take a picture of Smoke surrounded by the snow...and in the literal sense too. You can see how deep it was by looking at the snow in my rims...couldn't believe how deep it got that weekend. It really wasn't all that cold from what I remember...just snow, snow and more snow. Wish I had a garage, but unfortunately both my boyfriend and I live in mobile homes and don't have one. Trust me...Smoke let me know he wasn't happy about sitting outside in all that snow.

Ok, we know the HHR will go in the snow. But will it stop? I've owned other front wheel drive cars and have had success driving in snow but the HHR is a lot lighter. When I drove manual transmissions, I could always downshift to help slow the vehicle. How does the automatic HHRs do?

I'm with Snoopy. I avoid cold, if at all possible. We had lows in the 30's this week and I was freezing.

Not too much problem stopping. The car is relatively light so it doesn't have all the energy to disapate during brakeing (Newton-a body in motion stays in motion, and e=mc2). It works wonders downshifting to I (intermediate) when slowing.

Well I got to find out how the ABS Braking system works this morning. It was 12° when I left for work and was traveling down the road, at the first stop light, traffic was backed up, didn't see the ice, hit the brakes felt the HHR start to slide a little then felt the brake pedal pumping, she stopped straight as an arrow. I was relieved!!!

Dang.
And here I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to pop open the sunroof and worried at how dirty Blackie was gonna get after the storms hit here in SoCal this weekend!
Great picture!
