2007 HHR 2.4L died

Drove it to my home and as it idled it seemed a bit off they turned off and does not start. If this is a timing chain do they set a code, because there is none. Thanks

Sometimes but not always. Pull the valve cover off and have a look, could be the front guide broke

Sudden failure doesn't give time to set some codes. Maybe most. I have no idea if the system will attempt to ascertain correct cam timing while trying to start. Plausible. Maybe someone else knows.

You didn't say if it cranks.

Long list of causes of crank/no start.

No crank diagnosis is a little simpler. Usually.

Do not crank it! If it is the timing chain you’ll ruin the engine, piston and valves damage!

Why would you think timing chain ? There are many other things that can keep an engine from starting. Did you fail to state some symptoms like a bad engine rattle or something?

Just being cautious, we all know the damage that can happen with a broken front guide or chain

latest, is that I checked the oil and it is a milk shake, so it seems like the head gasket is going. Started it up and it ran like as if it had no problem, but the head gasket is shot and water is getting into the oil.

I bet you rely on the analog temp gauge. If there is water in the oil the water in the radiator is low and the engine might have overheated.

I think you hit it on the head. It did over heat a couple of weeks ago and it was do to a bad thermostat the rubber on the inside was all distorted and I replaced the stat and it ran cool the temp got up to 240 degrees on the digital reading in the car. Ran great and ran at a prefect temperature. I moved it from the back to the front and it runs perfect now and started perfect. the other day it jus cranked about 4 sec. and I shut it off.
