Direct injection of fuel into the combustion chamber occurs when the air charge has been almost entirely compressed by the upward stroke of the piston. You need fuel pressure of well over 1000 psi to drive the fuel into the already compressed air charge.
It is a clever way of entirely eliminating pre-ignition, thus allowing turbochargers to work more efficiently with lower compression ratios.

I think you mean to say HIGHER compression ratios then past non di motors since turbo motors tend to use low compression due to the pre ignition issue created by the excessive heat in the charged air.

What it does use is a returnless fuel rail. There is no vacuum operated pressure regulator. That is one of the reasons I got confused.
