2007 LT 2.4 vin P fuel question
#4
Been discussed many times on this forum in the past.
I know the 2010 owners manual says "should" use 91 octane or higher. Does not say must use.
The manual also states you "can" use regular or 87 octane but states performance may be affected and engine ping may occur.
Your choice. Your car. Do what you want.

As per the 2007 owners manual:
"If your vehicle has the 2.4L L4 engine (VIN Code P), use premium unleaded gasoline
with a posted octane rating of 91 or higher. You may also use regular unleaded gasoline rated at
87 octane or higher, but your vehicle’s acceleration may be slightly reduced, and you may notice a
slight audible knocking noise, commonly referred to as spark knock."
I don't know why some can't understand what the owners manual is saying.
We ran nothing but regular for the life of the car - and never had a problem,
nor did we miss any added performance that higher octane might provide.

I have a 2011 2.4L in my 2LT and I tried 92 octane for 3 months as a test I then switched to 87 Octane from Costco which is a High Volume Station so the fuel is always fresh.
I could not see or feel any difference between the two grades of gasoline.
I have never detected any tendency for pinging under every condition that I drive.
The mileage has always varied between tank full checks, but that also has stayed about the same with either fuel.
Generally 5 to 8 cents a gallon savings depending on total cost of each gallon at the time of fill up.

Down here where I live the difference between regular and premium gas is about 55 cents per gallon. It costs me about $6--$8 more to fill my SS with premium.

We live near a Refinery. That may be the reason but also Costco prices are always very competitive. They have the lowest prices in this small town.
Not sure how they can justify that much difference.
