I rarely get to drive the HHR, but my wife drives it everyday. She has a 50~ mile Interstate commute (75~ mph w/ AC on), and maybe drives 10~ miles a day around town. She is getting high 24's to low 25's. About 700 miles on the car so far.

I was hoping that she would be close to that 30 mpg mark seeing as though most of her miles are highway.
My HHR just turned 15,000 miles and the best I have seen is 24.2 MPG.

Remember, the DIC is calculating a running average of all driving unless you reset it per trip.

I do realize that, but with 50 miles a day Interstate driving, and 10 or less miles a day city driving, mine should be closer to the 30 mpg than the 23 mpg.

I reset mine with every fill-up too, and it's extremely close to the results of figuring it manually (yes, I do both every time). Maybe it's the relatively clean air in the South that causes us to have lower gas mileage. Well, that wouldn't explain it for CH. Yes, I'm grasping. I wish I could figure out how to get better mpg, too.

I have 6000 miles on mine and get 23-24 mpg per fill up. I have notice that if I drive 80mph the mpg will drop alot, if 70 to 75 it will go up (with AC on). I've tryed resetting the DIC when on the freeway, and only once saw 30mpg for a short time. I adverage 350 miles per fill up. I drive 30 miles round to work and home daily, the rest is around town. In August I will be driving to Lake Havisue?, 368 miles one way, that should be a good test. Will one tank make it? In My 89 Honda Accord LX 5sp manual, I could go 440 miles on a tank, with 4 people and a trunk full. My son has it now and with 200+ still gets 30+ mpg.

I have 5000 miles on my HHR. It is the 2.2 w/ 5 spd. I avg about 28.7 MPG. MY high is 34.4 and low of 26.5 MPG. I have rarely had the A/C on. I mainly drive for work which consists of both in-town and a bit of highway. So far so good.

Although my 2001 Lumina with over 110K still avg'd about 27MPG with a high of 35MPG. And that was with the 3.1L. Just seems like the HHR should be higher...............................

One quick question, could some of the mods to the exhaust and air intake etc... be causing a drop in MPG????? but a increase of HP of course, at least so I've read. I have not done those mods to my HHR YET

Trip Results

I just return from a trip this afternoon. I cruised from Calgary Alberta Canada to Zion National Park, Utah and the Grand Canyon. Went with 3 friends and we had my HHR loaded full.

This trip was all interstate driving (I-15) at an average of 75-80mph. The trip down I had horrible mileage! I averaged just over 25mpg. On the trip back I averaged a slightly better 29.5mpg.

My 2000 Chevy Impala did a similar trip with the same amount of gear and people for Moab Utah 2 years ago. With the 3.8 V6 I obtained 32 mpg.

I'm disappointed in the 2.4 litre and I'm ready to trade in the HHR after this trip. Actually I'll probably keep the HHR becuase I get about 33-34 mpg in the city but on a trip its not very efficient.

Well, with only 700 miles on the odometer, I can't say I'm ready to trade the HHR just yet, but I really was hoping for more. With the exception of my truck, this is the first vehicle I have owned that gets less gas mileage than what the sticker says. Every other vehicle I have owned has been underrated. The HHR seems overrated.

I was tempted to buy an equinox for more room, but went with the HHR because of the mileage. If the equinox does get what it is advertised to get, then the mileage difference is slim to none really.

I've had mine a little more than 6 months...and I don't do a great deal of highway driving. I've seen a low of around 25 and a high of 28.9. I did take it to Estes Park when CJ was here and I still got around 27 mpg doing mountain driving. Pretty impressed with that for sure.

I'm also one of those who tends to "get on it" though, especially when I see at PT Loser in the vicinity. Should have seen the black one trying to keep up with me yesterday...left him in the dust.
