I have an auto... I use cruise control like a madman and use premium per owner's manual. It is mixed with city but not a whole lot. Just has over 5000 miles on it... yet to get over 23 mpg. What could be wrong?

Safety and crash worthiness not withstanding, my point was and is that we really haven't come very far in 30 some odd years from a pure mpg standpoint.
My '80 Fiesta got better mileage than that, but then it had a 55hp 1.1 liter engine, that was quite sufficient to drag the empty box that was its body around. I'm sure I could have lifted the back end off the ground by hand...had I been confident that I wouldn't tear the bumper out of the bodywork.

29.9-30.8 on trip

I just got through driving from Ocala, Fl to Beaumont, Tx and back on Mothers Day weekend. All interstate driving 2007 2.2, auto, 40100 miles on car when I left, used only 87 octane, tire pressure was 42psi on Firestone Affinity tires set cruise control at 78 mph and left it there except when I had to slow down due to traffic, construction or town. I left at 02:15 in the morn so I didn't have much traffic on the road except trucks. Stopped to get fuel and food and that was it. I cleared the milage on trip A at every refuel and calculated the mpg by calculator, didn't rely on just the DIC. Kept the receipts and Spent less than $130.00 for gas to go all the way over and back. Left on friday morn and was back home on Sunday evening. I'm real happy with the milage because I drove for time not babying it to get max mpg.

it is a known fact that CRUISE CONTROL will decrease your fuel economy in a fly-by-wire car.

try using your foot instead of your buttons, and you will see an increase in MPG.

if you SET the cruise control to 60 mph, the throttle will actually fluctuate MORE just trying to maintain that speed. on/off the gas...on/off the gas...cant you feel it happening?

try driving the car instead of riding in the car...you might be surprised

You're joking, right? Where can one find proof of this fact? (hilly terrain notwithstanding...)

I'd like to see some evidence for these statements. You are contradicting ALL auto publications, ALL auto consumer groups, ALL recent (and there are many because of current events) newspaper articles. If they are incorrect, I would like to see proof, so i can send it to them.

My Cruise Control performs perfectly steady as long as the road is relatively flat. But, even with "rolling hills" it still will outdrive most drivers who consider thenselves experts (according to AAA).

Yours may be faulty if you are getting fluctuation.

I have a 2LT and get no more than 20mpg on the highway and 16.8 is the highest in the city. I'm just going to shoehorn in a LS7 and get 25mpg and run 11's.

We have been averaging 24.5 w/ our 2.4 auto 1LT, but interestingly enough I haven't been able to change the oil due to things and after 40% oil life our mileage went to 22.5. This is the second time I've let our oil life go that low and both times our milage dropped. I could only dream of 25+ MPG.

Viking Rods? Seriously, like i told another HHR owner on another forum. If you get less than 30-32 mpg on the highway in cruise, on a flat long road, at 59mph .....your HHR IS BROKE.
