5000 Trouble Free Miles!
I purchased my HHR (2LT, 2.4, automatic) in the second week of July 2007. I now have just rolled over the 5,000 mile mark with no problems. As a result, I am a very satisfied owner.
In a way I am surprised that I ever purchased another GM car after owing a god-awful 1997 Malibu and an equally god-awful 2000 Malibu. I liked the looks and layout of the Malibus but they were horrendously unreliable cars and ridiculously expensive to maintain. After my Malibu experiences I knew I would never own another GM or American car. Then, the HHR appeared on the horizon!
In July of 2006, when I was back in my hometown of Juneau, Wisconsin, my 2000 Malibu broke down yet again and needed $1,800 worth of repairs. When I was at my hometown Chevrolet dealer, Mueller Auto, I spotted an HHR. It was a 1LT with an automatic. I took it for a test drive and I thought, “I think I could live with this.” At that point I started researching HHRs.
The more I thought about the HHR the more I liked it. I compared it to the BMW 3 series, Mercedes C series, Audi A4, Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and VW Passat and GTI. I really liked all of those cars but I always went back to thinking that the HHR was the car for me. This past summer my horrible Malibu needed another $1,500 of repairs and I finally had enough of it. I called Mueller Auto back in my hometown and asked them if they could find an HHR for me equipped exactly the way I wanted it. They said they would try.
It took a few days but Mueller’s found the perfect HHR for me. It was black with black leather interior, it had the high polished 17 inch aluminum rims, automatic, sunroof, heated seats, 6-disc CD changer, running boards, Onstar, XM, roof rack, HHR mats, and virtually every option that you can get on an HHR. I consider it my luxury mini-Suburban! It’s comfy and I get compliments everywhere I go with it. Also, as an added benefit, I saved thousands of dollars over the prices of the other cars I was looking at and I don’t look like I’m following the heard.
My HHR has, thus far, proven to be very reliable—far better than those junky Malibus. It drives nicely, it’s quiet, solid, hauls all of my gear, and gets reasonable gas mileage. I had hoped for somewhat better mileage but no one who lives in Mankato gets good in city mileage. There are just too many steep hills and stoplights to get good in town mileage here. Still, on the highway, depending on speed and wind, I get between 28-31 mpg and that’s not too shabby considering that my HHR is not a featherweight.
I know that it’s only been five months of ownership but if the HHR keeps going the way it has been I will be a very happy owner for a longtime to come. My HHR is a great traveling companion and even has an EPA green rating. Not too shabby!
All in all, the HHR seems to me to be a great automobile value. Considering that I could have purchased a much more expensive car and chose the HHR says a lot for the vehicle. I have to thank Chevrolet for building a car for me!

Im am glad to hear you like it but I would not get too excited over any car that has 5000 trouble free miles, When it gets to be around 60K thats where the good is separated from the bad.
How many miles did your Malibu's have?
Mine has 13k and the reliability jury is still out. I was seduced by the price and the look. I am very wary about GM still. I am not crazy about anything done or made with Union labor though.
