6 speed auto

6 speed auto
I'd like to get a HHR, for personal use. I currently have a 2004 Toyota Matrix. I wish the HHR could get better MPG. We have a Panel HHr at work. The best mileage, I achieved was about 28.4 mpg on the road. The one tank around town was 24 mpg. My Matrix gets 32 around town, and usually about 35 to 37on road. Even with mods.
I seen GM has a 6 speed auto in Europe, why can't they.

They are putting the 6T40 in the new Malibu, but we'll probably have to wait until the next generation Delta cars come out in 2011 before a six-speed makes its way down to this level.
GM tried using the Japanese Aisin five-speed in the current platform back in 03-04 in the Saturn ION, but it proved too unreliable so they went back to the GM 4T40 for the rest of the Delta cars.

Are you sure you aren't looking at the ratings for the 2009 with the 2.4 powerplant? I had a 2005 Matrix and I know I could avg 34-36 on the highway, at least during the summer months....even pulled off a couple of tanks over 37 mpg but not that often. I still have some remorse over trading that car in...especially in light of the way gas is now. Matrix is a great little car, I miss it
The 2.2 in the HHR is rated for 30 and I've been avg 32-34 my last couple of fills (highway and keeping within respectable speeds I might add) I have found I get better mpg doing 65-75 mph in a 4 car train than doing 60 all by myself.....I knew watching NASCAR all these years would be good for something lol

I though the Matrix was rated 28/34 for the automatic for that year (2004) and 30/36 for the stick?

So the newer Matrix gets worse mileage than the 2005 model? And by that, the Matrix got better mileage than their gas mileage leader (non hybrid) Yaris? Several get a couple of MPG's highway better than listed, but 9/10?
Toyota.... Oh what a feeling.....

There are lots of threads on this site on fuel economy and that horse still hasn't been beat to death, and probably never will. Some get astonishing to others that get dreadful. And don't think you are getting beaten up on the matrix mpg, but what you state sounds astonishing if it can achieve it.
It may be an emissions thing on the 6 speed transmission but we will never know unless a GM person states why they don't offer it in North America and most likely that won't happen on this site.

Both mine and his were 1.8's which I guess leads to why the 09's with the 2.4's get worse MPG
That car other than some issues with the windows gave me 64k totally trouble free miles in 2 years time. Orig pads and rotors too with a lot of miles left on them!
