I agree. The tires "float" on wet snow. A narrower tire or heavier car would bite into or even through the snow. The stock tires are poor on wet snow. A snow tire will help but it takes a narrower tire to bite down.

I don't understand the claims of light weight. 3200 pounds is not light. Most older sedans were 32k-35k pounds.
I have had 4000+ pound vehicles act the same way as the HHR.
The only issue I have had with the HHR in snow is the ground clearance. I hate pushing snow with the front end.

Bummer... Sorry to hear about the crash. Yeah, winter can be a quick surprise when you lose traction. It really doesn't take much when they start to slide. I will say though, the winter handling of mine is 5x better once I spent the money on the Blizzak tires.
From the sound of the damage, I would be surprised if they do not total the vehicle. Being hit on two corners and taking out the trans, '06 with 75K miles... It is toast in my opinion.

I think next year, I will get better tires for the winter and take them off in the spring.
Thanks again!

Sorry abut the crash...
There is nothing wrong with the HHR in snow. Only a few have issues and some of it is driver related and in this case I suspect it is the new tires and conditions did not agree. Nothing more or less.
The HHR drives as well as most FWD vehicles out there.
I have had 4X4 trucks slide onto the other lane for no reason other than road conditions like ruts, Ice and slush. I have had to deal with over 30" snow in the last 10 days and the HHR has not even given me a slight scare in anyway. In your case it was just one of those things where everything combined to created a problem you just did not get away with this time. Crap Happens no matter how many times you play those crunching seconds in you head. I have done it too after my crunch.
The bottom line like after my accident you walked away and you can get another car.

I would like to know what kind of tires you have on your HHR...
