Advice on HHR SS purchase

Hi guys, I'm looking at a 2009 HHR SS auto... love the look, the feel and the power. However, I'm not mechanical in any way. Is there anything I should be looking extra hard at on the HHR SS, or any quirks I should be aware of? The car has 24,500 miles. Are there any special things or maintance issues because of the turbo. So far the dealer wants $17.995. Thanks, Mike

Where in Maryland are you located Mike?

I have a 5 speed but I hear the guys with the autos talk about the brake fix. Guess that is an issue that perhaps has been corrected. Hopefully some of the more knowledgable members will chime in.

As much as I would hope that the used HHR SS's were selling for that kind of money, it does sound a bit high.

" I hear the guys with the autos talk about the brake fix."

I could be wrong, but I believe this was fixed for most of the '09 run and newer.

Paid around 17 for my 09 with the stage one included at 19500 mine does a freeky brake thing when first started but its always when I pull out of the garage the next time I touch them its good so I haven't even brought it up cause it would have to spend the night at the dealer for them to replicate it. Drive it down a dirt/gravel road to check the sway bar end links you will know instantly if they need changing. If you are buying from Chevy dealer have the stg 1 included you will thank me later.

Dear marylandmike,

I too highly recommend testing driving the vehicle. Even if you have done this already, it won't hurt to test drive it again.

If you have not done so already; you could talk with the dealership about review the service records for this vehicle.

I hope that you have a good weekend!

I bought my 09 about four months ago, $19,000 with 19500 kilometres on it. No issues so far (knock on wood). I had owned an 06 LS before and knew I wanted an SS as soon as I saw them. Love the car and will be keeping her for a long time.

The only thing I could advise is use Premium gas at all times and use Synthetic oil when changing. GM recommends premium and they came with Synthetic from the factory.

I believe the brake fix was for the mostly the 08's and some 09's. There was a TSB about it where GM would install a vacumn pump for enough vacumn to operate the power brakes at cold start ups. With Stage 1, the autos are almost identical to the 5 speed in performance. Find a reputable dealer to install the stage 1 and you may have to drive a bit but it will save you from problems down the road. For an 08, that price is really high. Thats what the used 2010's with under 10,000 miles are going for. I would shoot for around 15,500 as a start. The dealership I traded mine in at, was listed at 16,850. Mine was a 2010 with only 12,000 miles and stage 1 included. Just be paicent and find the one you want. If I could do it over again, I would have went 5 Speed, ABM, Brembos, and limited slip. But, I couldn't find one where I wouldn't lose my butt on. If I could have, I may have been still driving an SS. So, I bought a Lightning.
