After only 12 years,...

So after 12 years the battery in my HHR has finally given up the ghost.

I don't know why it lasted so long and I worry about how long the one I got from Wally world will last.

I have read right here how others have gone through several batteries and wondered then how mine has lasted so long.

Last winter I did not drive the car for over a month in the cold weather {we have a 2016 Sonic so had no need of the HHR} but when I charged the battery it came around and lasted till the second day of -10 degrees.

When I took the battery out it was frozen solid. I let it thaw for 4 days then connected the charger over night. It did not respond very well.

I could see through the plastic that some of the cells were a bit on the low side but, it is a sealed battery and I don't know where to drill holes to refill the blame thing so a new one was the best bet for me.

My OEM battery was a sealed unit, the new one I just installed has 6 round discs you can unscrew with a quarter to top up the fluid, I will use distilled water for that.

"Sealed" lead acid battery? Where does the gas vent?

I have seen them that looked like there was no way, but have a plastic cover that pops off if you do it right.

This is after the decal is pulled off.

Mine vents out thru the grey tube in the right by the positive terminal in this picture

I didn’t look under the label, the battery was done, so it went to the battery recycling centre!

That’s like my old battery in my S10.
My HHR battery has a small hole in the same area has that and this barbed 90degree fitting goes into it

If that battery on youtube was a series 90 it would have round vent holes and a plug in one and the posts would be reversed and round.

Lead acid batteries would explode if they were really sealed, "Spill Resistant" would be a better description.

Point was there is a way to top off "sealed" batteries. You just need to know how to do it. Now, we all know how.
