personally, i would try the ice cube method first. No chemicals involved, it wont damage any carpets and its FREE. Years ago, i had this book on simple home made cleaning solutions . You know, using stuff like baking soda, vinnegar, dish soap. Lost the book, but now i just google like i did for my original answer . AT one time, wayyyy before television and radio, people came up with non toxic simple household solutions that worked fine. Then along came tv/radio/magazine advertisement bombarding us with one ''miracle improvement'' after another. TRY the ice cubes, hopefully it works and you save yourself money and health.

I agree with the ice solution.

Several years ago, I used a small piece of "dry ice" to remove gum from micro fiber upholstery in a boat. Purchased it from a Ralph's Market in SD. Worked like a champ.

I believe the theory is to arrest the adhesive properties in the gum. Once the gum is chilled it suspends that action.

I used one of those "Blue Ice" camping ice packs to harden the gum as much as I could, then scraped much of it out. Some was so bound up in the fibers, though, that it simply would not release with freezing, despite three freeze/scrape attempts. Eventually I resorted to surgical cutting of the fibers with an Xacto knife. If you're specifically looking right at the spot and know what you're looking for, you can see there's a little snafu in the carpet there, but for the most part it came out without too much of a problem. It sure had me worried for a while, though, and while I'm not happy with having a marred area like that, it could have been much worse in the end.

Hmmm...peacefully removing gum accidentally put on my carpet, or sleeping on the couch with the cats for a week? Which to choose?

I don't have any kids, but yes...there was much swearing when I saw it there for the first time. My dad has a remarkable talent for obscenities; it seems that I picked that up, too, for use in special cases like this!
