either bakes nice and golden brown, or is freezing cold in the hhr. i can ever get a nice climate going on in there. and the two little circle vents on the sides of the dash do not help the situation at all...

Now that you ask, this is the seconded new vehicle (2004 F150) I have had that the floor heat air control is terrible, hard to get your feet warm in the winter time without overheating upper cabin air but I thought it was just me, then I just got a new Ranger (An old platform design obviously) Great floor heat just the way it should be. Bad engineering in the HHR I would say.

I find that when you have the bi-level set (air up top and at the feet), there is hardly any air going to the feet area.

Have to set it to floor only to get the feet warm, and then switch it back.

What I do is close the vents on the passenger side and turn on bi level. When I start to get warm I switch to floor only. Then, when I get warm I turn down the temp to 3/4, then to half. Usually this keeps it rather comfy for my journey to work. And since I travel to work alone, I can get away with keeping the vents on the pass. side off. I've noticed that the heat coming out of the vents is quite hot, so turning the temp down a bit really helps to keep it from roasting me.

I usually start either with defrost or dash vents. Then I switch to the foot mode. Because I have the temp cranked all the way, a trick I learned is to crack the window open about 1/4". This pulls the heat from the floor up into the cabin. After that I switch the fan to low, cut back on the temp control, and make my way merrily along. When I vacation in Florida, I always use the 72 degree setting in my sister's van.

My model has this larger nob, with half red & half blue, which adjusts my temperature of either heat or coolness.

I did'nt have any problem this summer, either the windows down or the A/C on (for the two days a year that we need it).

This winter finds me switching from floor to bi-level to defrost, but no complaints yet.
