Anybody tried putting a rack or anything on their HHR?
So I want to carry a Kayak on top of my HHR, but I have yet to find an aftermarket rack that will fit the car, and the factory rack is over priced and all but useless. Has anybody else done anything? I thought about having some Yakima tracks mounted to the roof, but I'm leary of problems in the future and voiding warranties and what not.
Suggestions? Thanks.

to the forum...glad to have another HHR member in the fold. The search engine here is your friend. We've had several people add different racks to their HHR's. Here's the results of a search I just did.
Have fun and be sure to post some pics and more details about your HHR.

Check out my pictures in the picture gallery. Although I have a roof rack, I bought some of the foam blocks, placed the kayak on them on the roof, then used staps to secure it to the roof rack. It worked very well.
I only travel a short distance so I'm researching to see if I can buy kayak saddles that can be connected to the roof rack.
I agree that the cross bars are just way overpriced!

If you have an LS, we hear you're out of luck, the roof on the LS isn't supposed to be able to support any weight.
If you have an Lt, you can have a rack put on, if Chevy does it, they want eight hundred dollars! In our search, we couldn't find any to fit the HHR, although in our case it wouldn't do any good since we bought an LS after every dealer in town told us we could put a rack on it, and before finding out that you're not supposed to.
Be advised that Chevy has now told us that if we do have them or anyone put a roof rack on our car it voids the paint warranty.
Good Luck!

I know several people who have successfully installed Thule units on their HHR's with no problems at all. The one on the LS HHR below is a 13 cubic foot Thule. It has been loaded to the max and been on several road trips with no problems whatsoever.
Here is the system and the suggested retail is $192 for the 4 feet and crossbars.

You said that Chevy told you this, however, I would venture to guess that it was actually your dealer who said that. If it were me, I'd be going to another dealer for a second opinion.
Finished product...two toned to match the HHR.

Thanks for all the responses, I appreciate it. I'm trying to stay away from the factory rack because I really don't want to spend all the money for it, and I don't think it will give me the distance I want to support my kayak. (It's over 12ft and I want a good amount of dispersion to support it.) Yakima has tracks that you can bolt to any vehicle which I'm thinking is probably my best option. If installing any rack, including the GM rack, onto the vehicle outside of the factory voids the paint warranty, then I figure I have nothing to lose. I don't want to do it myself in fear that I'll screw something up, but my dealership said they'd install them for me for $180. Has anyone ever seen these tracks installed or know any reason why I shouldn't get them?

Did a search using the word yakima and came up with the following results. Maybe you'll find what you need in one of these threads.
