Ive seen 110 in the SS before the upgrade..i didn't go past that yet as I was actually heading to work and wasn't out to set land speed records..now,,in my truck (89 chev 5.7) I had the speedo completely wrapped around where the indication was setting on the 35 mph mark, flat on the floor and couldn't go anymore and was pushing 278k miles (and it wasn't in overdrive either, couldn't feather it enough to engage it,I tried though). Funny thing, it was under 4k rpm, bet the chip had me though I think it was just out of power, stil had the stock throttle body.

According to GM in stories that have been published the 5 Speed will do 155 and the auto is a little less around 150. With the speed rated tires GM most likley left a speed limiter off.
MY GTP has the Compitition Group package on it and V rated tires and Pontiac left the limiter off [it will clear 140 MPH]. On the normal GTP they put lesser tires on and limit it at 125 MPH.
GM as a rule limits a cars speed to the tires provided.

I think under the right conditions I think it could get to 150 mph Per the articals I have read and the numbers it shows. How stable it would be is another story.
As for a tire that changes speed limiters on cars. It is not done yet but could be done very easily. Some tires are now using chips to keep the info on them locked in the tire.
Goodyear already has chips in the NASCAR tires for ID work that can survive a 200 MPH tire shreading crash. It would take little to make one that the car could read.
In a society there Lawyers jump on anything I could see this as a possiblilty as time goes on.
