Auto Tranny Question

Howdy everybody. Got a chance to drive a 2LT HHR this weekend and really liked it. I had a question that I couldn't seem to find an answer to though. If the tranny is a 4 speed transmission, where is the 4th gear? All my other chevy 4 speed autos have had something like OD, D, 2, 1. The HHR only had OD, I, L. Seems like one of the gears is not externally selectable?

Hi mOrie! Welcome to the board!

"I" is actually "Intermediate" gearing. It is peppier for running around town or driving in a "sporty" fashion. It does go to "3" at about 4,000rpm.

Hope it helps,

Okay, I understand that the auto will select between 3rd and 4th on its own. But there is no way to physically select 3rd or 4th. Just the I(termediate) selection which lets the auto choose between the two gears on its own? Seems like there should be an overdrive off switch.

I noticed that also. Unless one of the guys on the forum that works for GM can explain otherwise, I don't believe that there is a way of manually disengaging the overdrive.
