The picture helps to recognize the actual part and location. Hopefully it needs a readjustment using my eyes as donbrew stated.
I miss the days when these type of switches were mounted on the steering column.

I read about another method that people used to align the switch, though it wasn't specifically an HHR switch.
The method goes like this:
1) Put shifter in reverse. (Car NOT running)
2) Activate parking brake (so car doesn't roll)
3) Loosen the bolts holding the switch down. The bolt holes are elongated to allow some adjustment room.
4) Turn switch clockwise and counterclockwise to find the range where the backup lights are on
5) Put the switch in the middle of the range and tighten screws, making sure switch doesn't rotate while tightening
I never tried it, but it sounds like it would work.
