What GM should've done is just build the socket adapter into the lid. That way, you just snap in your 3/4" extension & turn

This is what scares me about going over 500 miles on the first oil change. I'm at 1800 miles & think I'll get mine done this weekend. The first change is sooooo VITAL due to metal particles sandblasting the engine.

Thank you thank you thank you an08HHR.
I ordered one of those Sears sockets and it works great. I tried it out today and it has plenty of clearance.

One more observation. I put in a Fram filter this time. The NAPA I put in before was still new, but I didnt know if it would seal if I re-used it.
I compared the Fram to a SuperTech. I thought the SuperTech was the same as Fram (same number) but the SuperTech was the same design as NAPA (Wix). Maybe SuperTech buys from whoever gives it the best deal on bulk?

Ok,
how the heck do you order part number # 0099642000?

I have been to their website and didn't get any where searching on that part number, and the 32mm sockets I did find -
had different part numbers (and were much more expensive).

I tried a google search for 'sears' and this part number - and it just leads me back to this topic ;-)

I have everything I need for my first oil change - except the socket...

Go to sears.com and in the search window just type in oil filter socket wrench and you will find it.

Just go to AutoZone or any parts store and get a 1 1/4 socket for like 6 bucks and you are in business

I haven't gone looking for this yet on my 2.4. Filter and a socket? is the filter just hanging off like every other "normal' car or is it going to be an airfilter nightmare

Here are some pictures. I'm sure that most of you know were this stuff is but for the uneducated. The socket I bought at PepBoys. But you should find it at AutoZone, Advanced, Checkers, Oriley's, etc... And these pics are form my 06 cobalt, hence the yellow.
Here are two pictures so you can see what it looks like:

The black cap that has the two silver dots on it is the oil filter cap.

I like to use two extensions(these are all I have right now). It takes the wrench up high so no banged up knuckles.

Hope this helps.

Crap.. wish i would have found this topic before I had my socket problem.I thought I planned ahead and went to sears and bought a 32mm.. Needless to say it didn't work on our 2.4. I ended up using a cresent wrench also.

The key is to have a SHORT 32mm socket. Several people have cut down standard sockets and that works fine if you don't get the "special" socket for oil filters.

Also, this socket works on all the Ecotechs, including the 2.0

Since this thread has been bumped from last year, it is good info for new members.
