Battery disconnect for HHR.

Hi guys;

I would like to know what is the best way to disconnect the HHR's battery?

I plan to put the SS in storage next winter, and use my Astro AWD instead. I know there is a battery post in the engine bay, but the battery is located near the spare tire, in the back of the HHR. Can I just disconnect the battery terminal in the engine bay, or is it better to disconnect the battery itself?

I'm gonna expand on your question.

Is there a kit to add a kill switch to the SS in the back?

Either way works and neither is difficult. If you do the engine compartment make sure the possitive cable is no where near anything metal after disconnecting. I would personally do both cables in the rear.

It's always safer to remove the ground from the battery, there's no cable to drop onto opposite polarity bodywork, and no risk of accidental grounding by the tool you're using to remove the terminal. In cold climates it's best to bring the battery indoors somewhere cool, but not far below freezing.

I would prefer to disconnect the battery directly, but I think the rear tailgate opens electrically. If I disconnect the battey, i'm screwed....

You could always just put a disconnect outside the car like the race cars do. Then, when you switch it off, everything is disconnected and when you switch it on, you have the trunk working again (which you dont need anyway since the switch is outside). But you will loose all electronic memory, like the radio, clock, and any computer stuff.

Why not just leave the battery connected and hook a battery maintainer on to it.
I use one on my ATV, tractor and my S-10.
