I use one on my ATV, tractor and my S-10.
It's impossible for me to put a battery maintainer on the battery, during the winter. The place where I'll put the SS in storage, holds hundreds of collectors vehicle and RV's, and they must all disconnect the vehicle's battery, because of insurance. It's a requirement to get a parking slot there. There's a guard on duty there, at all times, and the place is heated.

If you unhook the batt in the rear. You can always hook a jumper batt up at the post under the hood which will provide power to the rear gate latch so you can open it. Then unhook the jumper batt, lift the gate and reconnect the batt in the rear.

Thanks! That's a good idea. I hadn't thought about it.

Can someone verify that this procedure works as stated? I am going to put the HHR away for the winter and would prefer to disconnect the negative terminal...

Keeping the battery on a battery maintainer would be my choice, or a computerized charger that will float it when its fully charged. The battery will be much happier kept fully charged. Those little maintainers are not that much money.

Dang! Sounds nice but I'm sure it's pricey!!! I'd love to store my stuff there.... But the pole barn will have to suffice...

I agree! There is absolutely no reason to disconnect the battery of a modern car or truck for storage reasons.

Perhaps he does not have an extension cord long enough to reach the barn.
