I have to ask how long it was parked without being driven? Sitting for weeks can drain an older battery enough that it has a hard time starting the vehicle. Made worse if you are leaving doors open while performing repairs or maintenance. Having the key in or out would not affect this.
It was only sitting hours while I replaced the heat blend actuator. The doors were open of course because it was summer.

When I had an older battery the radio would kill it in 15 minutes; a new battery might last an hour.

I made it a habit to always remove the keys when working on anything.. Just saying..

A GOOD TIP.
Goes hand in hand with removing the Battery cables when doing anything with electrical components.
