Battery location

Hi, I don't own an HHR yet and I've read that the battery is located in the back. Not a problem for me, but I'd like to know where exactly.

Is it down in the spare tire compartment? -or- is it tucked on the side between the sheet metal and the trim?

Just curious to find out how easy it is to access if/when I want to recharge.

It's probably too soon for that, but has anyone experienced a short in the (rather long) cable running all the way to the front? It happened to me once in a previous car, and it's a difficult problem to diagnoze. I'm wondering if some of the reports of HHRs dying randomly after hitting bumps could be attributed to this? That's the exact behavior that my car had when it started to "act up".

The battery is right next to the spare. You can't miss it when you take out the storage tray.

Had a '57 Renault way back when. That was just the opposite, engine in the back, battery up front in the "Trunk". (The spare was up there too.)
It was only a 6 volt system and the freezing temps back in Albany's Winters
made for some interesting mornings!

The battery also has "jumper cable/charging points" under the hood :)
They call them remote terminals.

If the battery goes dead, you will have to climb in through the back seat to open the rear hatch or Use the remote terminals to add 12 volts to the HHR's system to open the hatch

Having the battery in the rear is better for the car. They say it allows more room in the front of the car to add preformance parts.

Plus it keeps the battery away from the heat of the engine compartment and all of the nasty elements there.

How can you open the hatch from the inside? Is there an emergency release?
