I installed a Corvair engine in a 57 Bug. That car was a lot of fun. Tore up the split case trans and installed a tunnel case that was much stronger.

Throughout high school and college, I owned over a dozen VWs, mostly bugs but there was a Type 3 Fastback, a Type 1 Bus, and a Dune Buggy. Up here in the Northeast, heater boxes were always a problem, there either rusted shut or the boxes were corroded.

A Volkswagen equipped with a gas heater was a joy to have in New England. You could fire up the gas heater separate from the car and have a roasty-toasty passenger compartment before even trying to start the car.

The fumes from that had to have been pretty nasty.

Yes the air box design did try to kill you with the fumes when they rotted out and the gasoline ones would burn you out if they had problems.

I never had a problem with the heat transfer boxes, my sill/ducts always rotted out so that the engine was heating the world instead of me.
