Throughout high school and college, I owned over a dozen VWs, mostly bugs but there was a Type 3 Fastback, a Type 1 Bus, and a Dune Buggy. Up here in the Northeast, heater boxes were always a problem, there either rusted shut or the boxes were corroded.
A Volkswagen equipped with a gas heater was a joy to have in New England. You could fire up the gas heater separate from the car and have a roasty-toasty passenger compartment before even trying to start the car.
